Keep Me in Your Heart
One Of These Days
I want you to keep me in your heart. Hold me close to your love and all you are.
’Til the night is through, the birds sing it apart,
My promise is true, the faithful northern star

Give a weaver thread, give a potter clay.
Keep the good times fed, and give them room to play.
If what you have said will never harm what you will say,
Give my love a bed until my dying day.

I want you to keep me in your heart.
Hold me close to your love and all you are.

Something Stays On
One Of These Days
His eyes were blue, mine are brown-
That doesn’t change with what they’ve found.
His voice was clear, easy to be heard;
I repeat every other word
In time all fathers die, and move to memory.
My brothers use his tools, but they don’t work for me.
I hear from him when trees sing in the wind-

Ch-
Something stays on.

Her eyes are brown, a lot like mine-
She laughs more than I do, and it makes them shine.
She’d grown past twenty, before I’d time to learn.
All the coming years still want their turn.
Young girls, they do marry, and now she’s gone;
So many friends, so much to be done,
I hear from her, she’s the loving kind

Ch-
Something stays on.
Something stays on.

Maybe Summer
One Of These Days
Ch-
Maybe summer, good days come ‘round again
Maybe summer, good days come again.
Somewhere, sunrise has begun.
Maybe summer, good days come again.
Losing hope, losing fight.
Dark of the moon in the middle of the night.
Cold kills the fire, you’re slowly giving in.
It’s pulling apart all you’ve ever been-

Ch-
But maybe summer, etc.

Afraid in the woods, you hear one leaf
Fall when the wind blows, and you run like a thief.
No birds left to sing, but silent as it seems,
Skies are full of screaming banshees in your dreams.

Ch-
Maybe summer, etc.

Rocky
Keep Going On
I’ve been away from those troubles for some time.
I don’t miss it, it’s there to leave behind.
Hearing his name was a part of the grind,
One of the tough parts of working in the sun-
Part of the weather.

Aesthetics in that neighborhood, talking outta luck;
Rusted through Toyotas, run-down pickup trucks,
Bad tempered dogs, foul mouths, bald muck-
I guess the worst thing of all was being stuck
Hearing so much about Rocky.

They say he could have been lawyer, or something just as fine,
But he’d rather do what he likes with his time:
Drinking with his friends, getting the goo on,
A string of bars and ball games just for fun-
Long odds, willing bettors.

Same music, same people, same jokes every day-
When his friends are sober they still talk the same way.
They talk like drunks with a pocketful of pay.
Something wrong with anyone with something else to say,
When they’re talking about Rocky.

They talk about one night, the Rangers in a bind,
With an insult for everyone of the worrying kind,
He covered every bet, he said, “All you jerks stand in line-
Give me your money, one by one,
Or all together.”

Waiters thinking of dollar signs do some dance for him.
You bring your money with you, but you don’t take it home.
Drinks for the house, something for the team-
Nobody seemed to care how much he owed them-
Worth it for a night out with Rocky.

There’s things on this planet don’t show up in magazines;
People drink and holler, get ugly, make scenes.
Drive loud cars to noisy bars in unbecoming jeans,
Brag to their friends about where they’ve been-
Bragging about a big night out with Rocky.

Frack
One Of These Days
Looks as though they all agree,/ The meetings are all done.
Won’t likely talk to you or me,/ They got businesses to run.
Politicians, they can’t see/ Problems for anyone.

Ch-
Is this your home?/ They’re gonna frack it.
Drill gonna come./ They’re gonna frack it.
It might change things some./ They’re gonna frack it.

Better sign that lease real soon,/ Little as it pays.
They take it free, one minute after noon,/ Rule 37 says.
You can’t fight, this isn’t some cartoon./ might makes right these days.

Ch-
Is this your farm?/ They’re, etc.
A waste pit adds charm./ They’re, etc.
Might do some harm./ They’re, etc.
(tacit) /There might be some disease,
(tacit) / A tiny carcinogenic breeze,
But when the walls start shaking, just get on your knees./ No further questions, please!

Ch-
Water won’t last,/ They’re, etc.
They go through it fast./ They’re, etc.
And they poison the rest,/ They’re, etc.
(tacit) /They’re gonna frack it!

Lonely Sometimes
One Of These Days
A sound of something at the window, it might be rain.
The whole house says ,“Hello” again.
Walls and all of these emotions, here we stay-
My little dream floats away.
Worry in my mind-

Ch-
II:It’s gonna be lonely sometimes.:II(3x)
It’s gonna be lonely.
It’s like our bodies were the same, plus some odds and ends:
Bookcases, picture frames and friends.
Back there a year or a mile, I couldn’t do much right,
Whoever’s fault, it’s not our style to fight.
Sorry in my mind-

Ch-
II:It’s gonna be lonely sometimes:II(3x)
It’s gonna be lonely.

It’s gonna be, etc. (3x)

Bethany Hill
On Of These Days
It’s all your car can do to climb/ Bethany Hill.
The road from Wheeling, it’s not so wide,/ Like a window sill.
Hanging on that mountainside,/ Some reason for local pride,
Country clubs, well-kept lawns,/ Corn rows, fields beyond-
There’s a small town with a school. It’s the best of our good will.

Ch-
But it depends which way you climb/ Bethany Hill.
There’s more than one side to/ Bethany Hill.

One morning, turning wrong,/ A different road I wandered on,
Saw the fenced in boundary lines,/ Saw the neighbors with picket signs.
They work in a dying mill,/ Live next to a toxic fill.
Come up the back way, you will find,/ Quiet whispers lie behind
All the talking up at school./ Something there won’t keep still.

Ch-
But it depends which way you climb/ Bethany Hill.
There’s more than one side to/ Bethany Hill.

Crystal Sea
One Of These Days
Lights all halo, streets afloat,/ Night an unbreathing stew,
Near to a man in a woolen coat,/ Seen a storm or two,
Been traveling this world ’til passing here/ these years a half and three-
I heard his story in my ear,/ Then these words whispered he:
“When the bending of every tree/ Changes the set of your mind,
Drifting slowly to the leeward/ Calling of the wind,

Ch-
Then you’ll sail with me,/ Crossing the Crystal Sea.

We’ll sail but we won’t steer.
Love’s heart casts away fear,
And closer we’ll be-

Ch-
When you sail with me,/ Crossing the Crystal Sea”.

“Stands there the captain without a fleet,/ Making up a crew,
Ever growing with all we meet,/ Ever a berth for you.
When the summer has come and gone,/ Seasons reached an end,
All the proving’s been found and done, pebbles left on the sand,

Ch-
Then you’ll sail with me,/ Crossing the Crystal Sea.

One day the sky will clear.
A perfect ship will appear
For our journey.

Ch-
Then you’ll sail with me,/ Crossing the Crystal Sea.
You’ll sail with me,/ Crossing the Crystal Sea.”

( Get the Hate) Out Of Your Heart
One Of These Days
I might not be the one to talk/ ‘Cause I get those feelings too,
But here’s what I’ve been told/ and I’ve come to think it’s true:
That screaming in your mind,/ You know it’s only hurting you.
You know It’s only hurting you.

Ch-
C’mon and get the hate out of your heart.
II:Get the hate out of your heart:II(3x)

Like an ill-natured child/ Throwing toys at everyone,
Crying ’til you get them back/ So you can have more fun.
You better get your way,/ Before you get your gun.
You know before you get your gun-

Ch-
You better get the hate out of your heart.
II:Get the hate out of your heart:II(3x)

I want to see you sweet inside and/ I think I know how.
Singing is like laughing, if you’re not too proud.
“Til you find another song,/ Why don’t you sing with me for now?
Why don’t you sing with me for now?
Sing with me right now-

Ch-
Get the hate out of your heart, etc.

Doorways
One Of These Days
Still in dreams./ Growing promises,
So young, with wings to learn.
Meadows alive,/ Full-size butterflies,
Hillside flowers burn-

Ch-
Doorways to Glory,
Not always of gold,
Open all over every day.

Wiser with time,/ Doesn’t race the years,
An old face kindly worn,
Waits when the frost/ lines the last leaves,
’Til the next sky is born.

Ch-
Doorways to Glory,
Not always when told,
Open all over anyway.

Doorways to Glory,
Not always of gold,
Open all over every day.

One Of These Days
One Of These Days
The way the wood breathes in the rain,/ Returning the air,
The stillness in your heart will remain/ Somewhere.
The way the wind searches the plain/ Words and beaches bare,
Beginning as it ends,
Receiving as it sends,
Deeper than fear or pain,/ You will care-
The way you will give it again,
One of these days, bright and fair.

The way the wood breathes in the rain,/ Almost nothing there.
But still the hard wall bends.
The wounded hero mends.
When you can attain,/ You will dare-
The way you will find it again,
One of these days, bright and fair
